Paul’s fifth album since the break up of The Beatles, Band on the Run was made under difficult circumstances: band members Denny Seiwell and Henry McCullough left before recordings began in Lagos, Nigeria – which itself proved a challenging environment to work in. Despite the setbacks, Paul, Linda and Denny Laine persevered and Band on the Run – complete with its famous celebrity-packed cover art – proved a triumph. The album topped the US chart three separate times; in the UK, it was the biggest selling studio album of 1974 and spent a miraculous 124 weeks on the chart. Its success has endured and in 2000 the album was included in Q magazine’s list of Greatest British Albums Ever, as well as Rolling Stone‘s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. It was re-released in March 1999 to celebrate the 25th anniversary, and again in 2010, as the first release in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection, featuring the remastered album, with rare bonus audio and video content, all in new packaging.

Предыстория

1973 год стал очень плодотворным для музыкантов. Вышли такие знаковые для поп- и рок-культуры альбомы, как «The Dark Side of the Moon» группы Pink Floyd, «Goodbye Yellow Brick Road» Элтона Джона, «Catch a Fire» Боба Марли, «Made in Japan» группы Deep Purple (в США).

Работа над альбомом

Композиция Helen Wheels, записанная в числе прочих песен в Лагосе, в Великобритании вышла отдельно как сингл. Однако, в американском варианте альбома она вошла в альбом, седьмой композицией. Это собственно и есть основное различие между британской и американской версиями.

Обложка

Работу по подготовке изображения для обложки альбома поручили фотографу Клайву Эрроусмиту. 28 октября 1973 года, у кирпичной стены окружающей один из лондонских парков (Osterley Park), состоялась фотосессия для обложки альбома. Стиль и критика

Совершенство альбома в том, что он построен на элементах творчества, характерных для пост-битловского периода творчества. Band on the Run is a carefully composed, intricately designed personal statement that will make it impossible for anyone to classify Paul McCartney as a mere stylist again.

Признание

CD версия

CD версия альбома «Band on the run» с композициями, прошедшими ремастеринг, был выпущена в 8 июня 1993 года. Содержание полностью соответствовало виниловой версии. 15 марта 1999 года вышла CD версия альбома под названием «Band on the Run: 25th Anniversary Edition» (специальное издание к 25-й годовщине). CD-версия включала два диска. 1-й диск повторял LP-вариант издания для США. 2-й диск содержал различные бонусные материалы, включающие также и концертное исполнение некоторых песен. Издание диска было посвящено памяти Линды Маккартни.
